FAQs

What’s the difference between the D7 and the Digital Nomad Visa?
The D7 is for people living on passive income, pensions, rental income, dividends. The Digital Nomad Visa is for people who work remotely and keep earning active income from outside Portugal, either as an employee or a freelancer.

How much income do I need to qualify?
As a 2026 guideline, the D7 asks for passive income of €920/month for a single applicant, plus savings of 12 months’ minimum wage (about €11,040) already in a Portuguese account. The Digital Nomad Visa asks for €3,680/month in active remote income. Figures move with the minimum wage, so we confirm the current thresholds before you apply.

Does real estate still qualify for the Golden Visa?
No. Since October 2023, property purchase no longer qualifies. The route today is €500,000 in a qualifying investment fund or in business/job creation.

Do you only do visas?
No, we don’t just handle the visa application. We also support real estate purchases, company formation, NISS (social security) and SNS (public healthcare) registration, driver’s license equivalency, and other settling-in steps once you’re here.

How long does the whole process take?
Timelines vary by visa type and by AIMA’s current processing demand, but most clients go from document collection to visa approval within a few months. We give a realistic timeline once we’ve reviewed your situation.

Do I need to speak Portuguese?
Not to apply. Our team works in English throughout. Portuguese becomes relevant later, for permanent residency or citizenship, which require a basic (A2) level.

Do you help with permanent residency or citizenship afterward?
Yes. All three routes can lead to permanent residency after 5 years of legal residence, and we support clients through that renewal and, later, citizenship.
