After years of research this Canadian Girl decide to move to Mexico, and it was an exhaustive search, one that considered economic stability (the Pesos is a strong currency), friendliness of culture (Mexicans are very family orientated), proximity to Canada and the USA (you cad drive, fly and boat – even hike the PCT trail!), Climate (always warm and can grow food year round), All these and more pushed the needle towards moving here alone… which leads me to the last and biggest reason, its safe here in Puerto Vallarta.
Here are things I feel any expat would consider when moving from the comfort and safety of their home country. I feel like the top 3 things though are all solved with the mountain side sustainable community I bought into last year.
1. COST – These custom off-grid homes starting at 207m2 (2,228 square feet) on lots of super fertile land starting at 850m2 (9,150 square feet) all designed to include solar system for power, abundant live well water, led efficient lights, expansive indoor outdoor spaces and stunning views. They would easily cost over a million USD for the same land and home in the USA. Also the land tax is about $30 USD PER YEAR instead of thousands, and the cost of labour is so reasonable that you can afford help with cleaning, driving, gardening, babysitting… all the things that you wish you could get help with living in the USA but can’t afford with the price tag of $30-40 an hour.
2. LOCATION – If you have friends and family like most of us that will never leave “home” then this is a MAJOR benefit to buying in Mexico, you can live like a snowbird and easily come here in the poor weather months, or when you just want to get away and RDT can look after your place while your away or turn it into rental property. Located in the stunning Sierra madre mountains only 5km from one of the friendliest and safest towns in Mexico Talpa de Allende, famous for its agriculture, home to The Virgen of Talpa in the stunning Basilica de Nuestra Señora Rosario which attracts thousands of pilgrims every year. . The weather is amazing year round, and the views are superb. It is located midway between 2 metropolitan cities Guadalajara and Puerto Vallarta so it is easy to get there by car, bus, or plane.
3. FREEDOM – Now this is not so easy to put your finger on, but to me it is a sense of expansiveness, health and wellbeing.. and all these boxes are checked on the 180 acres owned by Real de Talpa. Holistic Living is a reality here. It has plenty of Clean drinkable water, pets are welcome, you can fish in the lake and garden in the organic orchard also hike or bike in the incredible wildlife conservation area.
