How I Passed the Italian Driving Theory Test on My First Try (29/30) After Less Than Two Months of Study

This article was originally published on The Bridge to Italy.

I took the Italian theory test yesterday for the Patente B and passed on my first attempt with a score of 29/30. My Italian is approximately B2, I studied for less than two months, only about three weeks of it intensively, and I did the entire thing on my own. I did not use Ambrish, which seems to be the best-known option among English-speaking expats, or any other school or course to prepare for the theory exam.

I mention all of that at the beginning because I know how intimidating the Italian driving theory test can seem if Italian is not your first language. The national pass rate for the Patente B theory test in 2025 was only about 60%, meaning that almost 40% of all tests resulted in failure. And that is the rate for everyone taking the test in Italy, the vast majority of whom are obviously Italians and native or highly proficient Italian speakers. The failure rate among foreigners and non-native Italian speakers is generally believed to be dramatically higher, with estimates of 80% or more sometimes cited, although I have not been able to find reliable current Ministry data that isolates that group. Whatever the exact number is, it isn’t difficult to understand why foreigners struggle with the exam. The language is formal, technical, occasionally antiquated, and the questions are very often worded in ways that make a tiny word or obscure exception determine whether the answer is true or false.

I have even heard people say that speaking decent but non-fluent Italian can be a disadvantage, because you understand enough to think you understand the question while missing the one word that changes its meaning. I don’t really agree with that. Obviously, the better your Italian is, the easier the test becomes. But I do think people greatly overestimate how well you need to speak Italian to pass it. You don’t need to become fluent. What you need to do is learn the particular Italian used on this particular test, and that is a much more manageable task.

The exam itself consists of 30 true-or-false questions, with 20 minutes to complete them. You can get three wrong and pass; four wrong and you fail. That sounds relatively forgiving until you start doing the practice tests and discover the extraordinary variety of ways in which you can get four questions wrong. Having just gone through the process, I think the biggest mistake would be to approach it by trying to learn everything equally. There is a huge amount of material, some of which appears constantly and some of which appears rarely. My approach was to learn the high-value material first and then let practice tests tell me what else I needed to learn. In my opinion, quality of study is more important than quantity, at least initially. Later, volume becomes extremely important because recognition is a huge part of the exam.

Start by taking the test when you have no idea what you’re doing

The first thing I would do is download the Quiz e Patente app, make an account, and take a couple of complete exam simulations without looking anything up. You will probably do terribly, and that’s the point. Don’t translate anything, don’t Google anything and don’t ask AI for help. Just answer the questions as best you can and see what happens. You aren’t trying to pass yet. You’re trying to get a broad understanding of what you are up against: what the questions look like, how the language feels, what subjects keep appearing and how far away you are from being able to pass.

Once you have done that, I would not start systematically working through every topic in the app. I think that wastes a lot of time. Instead, there are a few topics that are worth learning separately before you start doing large numbers of complete simulations.

Start with Topic 2, Segnali di pericolo, and do simulations consisting only of questions from that topic until you are reasonably familiar with most of the warning signs and what they mean. You don’t need to know every possible question perfectly. You just want to stop looking at the signs as if you have never seen them before. Then do Topics 3 through 5, Segnali stradali, in the same way.

After that, skip ahead to Topic 14, Esempi di precedenza / ordine di precedenza agli incroci. These questions look complicated at first, but they actually become very easy once you understand the system. The basic principle is that you give way to traffic coming from your right. If there is no vehicle approaching from the right whose path intersects yours, you can proceed. Once you learn to trace the cars’ intended paths through the intersection, these questions become very mechanical and should eventually be some of the easiest points on the test. Next, do Topic 16, Fermata, sosta, arresto e partenza, again using tests containing only questions from that topic until you understand the distinctions and are reasonably comfortable with the rules.

Unfortunately, you also have to learn the licence categories

There is no way around this part. Take some time to understand the different Italian driving licences, particularly AM, A1, A2, A, B1 and B. Learn the minimum age for each one, how you progress from one to another, and which vehicles you are allowed to drive with each licence. You will encounter motorcycles, mopeds, quadricycles, tricycles, power limits and various restrictions that initially seem to have very little to do with your ambition to drive a normal car around Florence, but learn them anyway.

Once you have a reasonable understanding of the licence structure, do Topic 20, Patenti di guida, sistema sanzionatorio, documenti e circolazione. At this point, I would stop doing the remaining topics individually. They don’t appear frequently enough to justify working through all of them systematically, in my opinion, and you can learn them much more efficiently as they appear in complete test simulations.

Now start taking real practice tests

This was probably the most important part of my study method. Take a complete simulation, and as you go through it, every time you encounter a question where you are not confident about your answer, write down the question number and put it into one of two categories:

Category 1: You don’t understand the question because of the Italian.

Category 2: You understand the question, but you don’t know the driving rule.

Finish the entire test before checking anything. Then look at your score and go back through every question you marked. Importantly, you should review all of the questions you were uncertain about, including the ones you got right. A correct guess does you very little good if the same concept appears in a slightly different form on the actual exam.

For Category 1 questions, put the question into a translator and figure out exactly what it means. Then ask yourself whether you would have known the answer if you had understood the Italian correctly. If the answer is yes, you have identified a language issue rather than a knowledge issue, so make sure you understand the word or construction that caused the problem and move on. If you still wouldn’t have known the answer, then you have a rules problem as well and need to understand both.

For Category 2 questions, I found AI extremely useful, but you have to be careful because AI gets these questions wrong with surprising frequency, particularly when an obscure exception is involved. I would use prompts along the lines of: “This was the question. Why did I get it wrong? Explain the answer and the underlying rule, including any exceptions. Verify the question against the Ministry database and make sure the answer is accurate.” If the explanation doesn’t make sense, push back. I did this constantly. Sometimes the AI was right and I hadn’t understood the rule; sometimes it had missed an exception. The important thing is not to blindly memorize an explanation just because ChatGPT delivered it confidently.

This two-pronged approach worked extremely well for me because I was learning the language of the test at the same time that I was learning the rules. Instead of spending hours studying material I already understood, almost all of my study time was being directed toward something that an actual exam question had shown I didn’t understand.

Start looking for the linguistic traps

Once I was regularly getting around 22 to 24 questions right, I started paying much more attention to the exact wording of the questions. There are certain words that should immediately make you slow down:

alcun, nessun, anche, soltanto, solo, unicamente, sempre, mai, qualsiasi, qualunque, necessariamente, obbligatoriamente, può, deve, purché, salvo, tranne, almeno

This is not a formula where the appearance of one of those words automatically means the answer is false. But when you see one, pay attention, and generally be suspicious when the wording makes a rule more absolute than it would otherwise be. Words such as sempre, mai, soltanto, unicamente, qualsiasi and qualunque can turn a statement about a general rule into an absolute statement. If there is even one exception, the answer may be false.

This was one of the areas where my Italian improved specifically for the purposes of the test. I stopped simply trying to understand the general meaning of a sentence and started noticing exactly what it asserted. There is a big difference between “can,” “must,” “only,” “always,” “at least” and “under certain conditions,” and the test takes full advantage of those differences. After enough simulations, you start recognizing these constructions almost automatically, which is much easier than trying to acquire enough general Italian to understand every sentence effortlessly.

Then it becomes a volume game

Once you understand the basic structure of the exam and are getting into the 22-to-24 range, I think the best thing you can do is simply take a lot of tests. Don’t worry yet about going back through every answer before submitting. You want volume and exposure to the question database, while continuing to use the same system: every uncertain question gets marked as either a language problem or a rules problem, and every uncertain question gets reviewed afterward, regardless of whether you happened to get it right.

Eventually, you start recognizing things. You see the same rules presented in slightly different ways, notice the same exceptions, recognize which words are dangerous, and signs that once required conscious thought become automatic. The formal Italian that seemed almost absurd at the beginning becomes much easier because you have seen the same constructions dozens of times.

Once you are consistently getting 25 or more correct, look at where your mistakes are coming from. If they are scattered across lots of subjects, I would simply continue doing full simulations. If you notice that you keep missing questions from the same topic, go back to the topic-specific section and spend some time on that subject before returning to full tests. I considered myself ready once I was consistently getting zero or one wrong, with an occasional two. At that point you have a reasonable cushion because the actual exam allows three mistakes.

The last few days and the actual test

In the final few days, I kept taking tests, but I don’t think there is much value in exhausting yourself. Do as many as your time and mental energy comfortably allow. This is also a good time to review some of the obscure details that occasionally appear and can cost you an annoying point: minimum tyre tread depths, unusual licence restrictions, rules concerning tricycles, things you can do with a particular licence in Italy but not elsewhere, and similar details. By this stage you should already understand the important material, so you are filling in gaps rather than trying to learn the entire curriculum.

Get a good night’s sleep before the exam, eat something, and arrive with enough time that you aren’t rushing. Once the test starts, use roughly the same cadence you developed during your practice tests, perhaps slightly slower. Twenty minutes is plenty of time if you are prepared. When you finish, go back through the entire test and check for careless mistakes. They can happen on any question, including questions whose underlying rule you know perfectly well. You can misread a word, overlook a negative, misunderstand exactly what is being asked, or simply click the wrong answer.

What I would not do is change an answer merely because you have now stared at it for two minutes and managed to make yourself uncertain. If you spot a genuine mistake or realize that you misread something, obviously change it. But if you understood the question the first time, knew the relevant rule, and are now just second-guessing yourself, I would be reluctant to override your original answer. I have particularly good evidence for this advice: I went back through my test, reviewed my answers, and changed exactly one of them. It turned out to be the only question I got wrong. My original answer was correct, so if I had left it alone I would have scored 30/30 instead of 29/30.

There are also two practical exam-day details worth knowing. First, once you are sitting at the computer, do not look away from the screen. The system monitors you and your screen can lock if you divert your eyes, so keep looking at your own computer. Second, if you wear glasses, take them off when you do the facial identification at the beginning of the test. I didn’t, and the system couldn’t identify me. I was already nervous enough about the exam, and now the computer was apparently questioning whether I was actually Niman Kenkre. I spent a few increasingly frazzled minutes trying to work out what was wrong before realizing that I needed to take my glasses off. Once I did, the identification worked. Not a major issue in retrospect, but not exactly the calming pre-exam ritual I would have chosen.

Since I spend much of my time helping other people navigate their move to Italy through The Bridge to Italy, I thought it was worth writing this up while the experience was still fresh in my mind. The Italian driving licence isn’t something we handle as part of our services, but it is one of the many things that people who make Italy their home may eventually have to deal with. Having just gone through the process myself, I hope I can save someone else at least a little of the confusion I had when I started.

The Bottom Line

The bottom line is that you do not need perfect Italian, months and months of study, or necessarily an expensive theory course to pass this exam. I studied for less than two months, only about three weeks of it intensively, prepared entirely on my own, and passed on my first attempt with 29/30. My Italian is good enough to live here comfortably, but it is nowhere close to native level. More importantly, much of the Italian I needed for this test wasn’t Italian I had learned from normal conversation. I learned it by doing the tests.

I also don’t think simply putting in enormous numbers of hours is the answer. Volume becomes important toward the end because you need exposure to a large number of questions, but the quality of your studying matters more than the raw number of hours. Every time you don’t understand something, identify why. If the problem is Italian, learn the Italian. If the problem is the rule, learn the rule. If you keep missing one subject, study that subject and then go back to taking tests. The point is to spend your study time fixing things you actually don’t know rather than working methodically through hundreds of pages of material simply because they are there.

The exam seemed pretty daunting to me when I first started doing the simulations. By the end, I was routinely getting zero or one wrong, and the actual test felt very similar to what I had been doing at home. So if you are an expat worrying that your Italian isn’t good enough, I wouldn’t let that stop you. You have to put in the work and learn some fairly obscure material, but it is absolutely manageable. Study the test rather than trying to memorize the entire Italian driving code, pay attention to the language, do enough simulations that the common questions and traps become familiar, and don’t sit for the real exam until your practice scores give you a comfortable margin for error.

Finally, when you review your answers at the end, absolutely look for careless mistakes. Just don’t talk yourself out of a perfectly good answer simply because you have enough time left to start doubting yourself. If I had followed that advice, this post would have been called “How I Got 30/30 on the Italian Driving Theory Test.” But 29/30 will do.
